The following characteristics: Volume, Concentration, Gross Motility, Morphology. The general semen examination can be extended with a computer-based analysis (CASA), which will also include the average speed of individual semen cells, the movement pattern, speed clusters and their distribution, head and the head cap analysis and a large number of other parameters. Before the insemination with (frozen or chilled) semen we do a computer-based analysis so we can control the quality at a specific and exact time. A computer-based analysis provides an objective result and forms a document that accompanies the semen to the receiver.
Chilling and freezing semen (dog and horse) We do the whole process of semen collection, evaluation and cryopreservation at our lab. Collection of the semen is done by our veterinarian at the veterinary clinic. The sperm will be collected manually and direct analysis of the freshly collected semen will be done in the laboratory. If the semen quality is good, it will be processed and diluted with an extender, and according to a strict protocol filled in straws and frozen. A small amount of the frozen semen will be thawed in the same day after the collection and freezing process. This will be done according to the specific thawing protocol and the quality after freezing and thawing will be determined. This will be shown in a document, which will also include how many straws are needed for one insemination. In general, semen that had excellent quality immediately after collection will show good quality after freezing and thawing.
After freezing, the semen is stored in one of the cryogenic tanks filled with liquid nitrogen (-196 degrees Celsius). For this a contract has to be signed between the owner of the semen and Criogen. An annual storage fee will be collected and an invoice will be sent by email to the owner. In case of using frozen semen with a third person we need a written consent (or email) from the owner of the semen. The lifespan of the frozen semen is in this way almost indefinite.
We prepare chilled or frozen semen for transport along with the quality documents and dry shipper. For a chilled semen transport the last possibility of collecting the semen is on a Thursday until 12:00 p.m. so that it can be delivered on Friday. The transport company does not deliver on weekends. For the frozen semen, transportation time is not so important: the regular dry shipper keeps the semen frozen for at least 10 days and a disposable dry shipper for 3 days.
We perform assisted insemination (TCI) for mares and bitches.
Mares:Through frequent ultrasound examinations and hormonal ovulation guidance, the ideal time for insemination is determined for both chilled and frozen semen.
We offer boarding for mares and foals
Bitches: we monitor the cycle by measuring progesteron levels, pregnancy is confirmed by ultrasound and we perform C-sections at our veterinary clinic.
